Richard Smith'Munich Olympics' Original Lithograph. Original Limited Edition of 4000. Printed by Matthieu Zurich Switzerland in 1970. This is not the cheaper unlimited Kennedy Graphics Edition. Notice the Matthieu logo bottom left.

Signature: Signed in the stone (not hand signed). Size: 25" x 40" (63.5cm x 101.6cm).

I have kept it in a climate controlled storage for the last +20 years. In overall good to very good condition. Colors very vibrant and not faded. Paper has not yellowed too much for it was never exposed to sunlight before. This is the original limited edition lithograph from 1970.

Not the unlimited poster edition! Allen Jonese made two versions. One is the original litograph edition in a limited edition run of 4000 pieces. The other one is the unlimited offset poster. Please note some sellers/buyers do not know the difference and unkowingly sell the unlimited edition as the rare lithograph edition. Some rubbing/marks/creases/tears along edges as pictured. Minor yellowing consistent with age. Overall very good to excellent condition considering age. Please note that this is an original work of art. It should be handled with gloves and utmost care. I suggest not to open it upon arrival but to to take directly to your frame store.

Tell them the surface is ultra fragile for it is a lithograph; not a cheap reproduction poster. Tell them to wear gloves and ask them to treat it as an art curator in a museum would.

Make sure to have them open it in your presence so you can both agree on the condition when you left it so there are no disputes. Have it framed with acid-free matting and a plexiglass frame (not glass). These are just my suggestions. Thank you for taking care of this valuable print. This iconic vintage lithograph featuring Allen Jones's signature modern style is a remarkable piece of art and sports history.

It is a fine reminder of Jones's importance as a key practitioner of bright pop colored artworks. In anticipating of hosting the 1972 summer Olympics, Germany sought to create a positive image for itself.

As Arnold Schwarzenegger described in his memoir "Holding the Olympic Games in Munich was meant to symbolize West Germany's transformation and reemergence in to the community of nations as a modern democratic power". The Olympic committee commissioned several international artists, including Josef Albers, David Hockney, Pierre Soulages, and Max Bill amongst others, to design promotional posters to position the event as The Happy Games. Artists were free to chose their themes, but also encouraged to incorporate Olympics ideals into their works.

This began a long and continuing tradition of commissioning beautiful art works to celebrate the Olympic games. Today, Pierre Soulages's Olympic poster is one of the most famous and sought-after examples from this series that combines art, sport and the international community. Please note that due to the value of this item, we will require a valid adult signature upon arrival, the person who signs for the package will need to match the person who buys it. Condition is as described and as pictured.
